Kitchen Before & After: A 1950s Kitchen Transformed by Colorful Mosaics

Teruko's kitchen renovation is one of the most colorful we've seen! This Culver City, California kitchen was dark and outdated before, but after adding three skylights, a large window, and an incredible Mexican tile wrap-around mosaic, this kitchen is now a bright, colorful, one-of-a-kind space.  This is a must-see!

So much tile is installed simply and in a running bond pattern, like brick, until it fills a space wall to wall. But bathroom floor tile has an opportunity to be so much more: It can be a way to divide the room, create a path or make a focal point. Don't let your bathroom floor tile go overlooked ...

Remember that backsplashes are part of a unit and should exist harmoniously with cabinets, countertops and the overall feel of the room. “If you have a countertop with a lot of differentiation in color and pattern, like a marble with a lot of veining, then keep the backsplash more simple,” Palumbo says. “If it’s a stone without a lot of differentiation, then you can choose a backsplash with more colors and patterns.”

      Shower Niches Between the Studs

You know those shower caddies that hang over the shower head? Or shelves that suction-cup onto the wall? They're fine for adding storage, but they do take up space, which can become a nuisance in a small bathroom where elbow room is lacking anyway. That's why we love the idea of shower niches recessed between the studs in the shower wall.

Bathed in Color: When to Use Green in the Bath (12 photos)

While browsing the latest offerings at my local tile showroom recently, I was struck by the abundance of green products, especially wall tiles. Soft sage and celery greens have been popular colors for home interiors for years now, but along with watery blue-greens, they're sharing the stage with lively leafy and lime greens more and more.

I didn’t want to spend a ton of money and I remembered I had some leftover mosaic tile from our master shower project. That box of mosaic tile was collecting dust bunnies and daddy long leg spiders on a shelf for four years so I decided to use a few of the leftover sheets of it to create a mosaic tile framed mirror on the bathroom wall above the vanity.

Bathrooms are the smallest rooms in the house for most of us. They also require the most cleaning and upkeep. That's part of why white is so seductive in a bathroom: It creates a sense of space, and it looks clean and bright.  But there are other reasons to love the all-white bathroom.

      Mexican Tile Work

The tiler has left for the day, and tomorrow we are leaving, so it will be a while before I see my kitchen wall tiles all grouted and polished, but I thought I would give you all a look at it. The wall tile is a crackle finish subway tile that I took all the way up to the ceiling. We have low ceiling on this level and I thought it would give it some height. For the windows, I used a handmade (and quite wonky) Mexican tile in a vivid blue, turquoise and yellow to give a hint of ...

Chris vs. Beveled Subway Tile, Day 1

Tiling this beveled subway tile went quicker than tiling the glass subway tile
in the main bathroom because the glass is manufactured and cut as completely
flat so if a corner sticks out a teeny, tiny bit you can feel and see
the difference and it looks like shit. The beveled tile allows for a small
difference without being noticeable, so you don't have to spend 10 minutes per
tile making sure it's flush and flat with all the others around it. As a result,
Chris moved up the wall fairly quickly.
